Why do we do research?

Research plays an important role in the protection of (endangered) animal species. By doing research, we learn a lot about the body, behavior and health of animals. We can then use this knowledge in conservation projects so that we help wild animals in the best possible way. We also measure the welfare of the animals in the park so we always provide the right care.

In the video you can see how we are helping in the fight against the deadly herpes virus in elephants. If successful, this research can be used both in zoos and in the wild.

We do research in three ways

Eindhoven Zoo is a great place for researchers to do research. This is because animals are more visible here than in the wild so they can be studied for longer periods of time. We share the resulting knowledge with other European zoos during conferences and meetings. In this way we work together towards the ultimate goal: nature conservation.

Starting your own research

Sometimes we have a question of our own for which we initiate research. We then often work together with research institutes, universities or other parks. We then help the researcher where necessary. In this way we join forces and carry out the research in the best possible way.

Facilitating research

It sometimes happens that students or institutions would like to answer an existing research question at Eindhoven Zoo. If their question matches our vision, we are happy to help the researcher and support them in carrying out the research.

Contributing to research

Sometimes researchers need animal material in order to carry out their research. For example, poop or hair from a certain animal for DNA research. We are of course happy to give this material to the researcher so that the research can be carried out.
