Pink-backed pelicans mainly eat fish. To catch these fish, they scoop the water with their beaks. This fills their throat pouch with water and fish. In a single scoop, they can scoop up around eight litres of water. They let the water run out of their beaks and swallow the fish. So they effectively have their own scoop net.
