Northern raccoons mostly live alone. During the day they sleep in a den, for instance in a hollow tree or between the rocks. At night they venture out to look for food. Sometimes you can see a group of raccoons together. They will almost always be a mother and her young. Brothers and sisters that have just left their mother will usually also stay together for a while.

You can see the Northern Raccoon in the ‘Social or Solitary’ theme area. Here, you’ll discover how animals live alone or in groups, and what the benefits of each are.
The city seems to be a good habitat for raccoons. They can find enough places to hide in a city during the day. At night they will forage for food. That is easy to find in the city as well. Raccoons often look for food in garbage bins. Those usually contain a lot of leftover food from humans. One square kilometre of city can sometimes house 69 raccoons.
