Long-tailed macaques are often found near water. They are excellent swimmers. Another name for these animals is ‘crab-eating macaque’. Long-tailed macaques often dive into the water to catch crabs, fish, and other animals. Swimming is not just a way to get food for these animals. They also use the water to cool off and to play.

You can see the Long-tailed macaque in the ‘On the Move’ themed area. Here, you’ll discover how animals move around and why moving – or, conversely, staying still – is important for survival.
Long-tailed macaques spend more time in the trees than other macaque species. Some groups of long-tailed macaques have been observed that hardly ever came down to the ground. They only came down within five meters of the edge of a river, to get to the water. It is a lot safer in the trees than on the forest floor. Apart from that, long-tailed macaques mainly eat fruit, which grows in trees of course.
