Lightweight

A Java sparrow weighs about 25 grams. That is very little, especially when compared to other animals. A mole, for example, is the same size but weighs more than three times as much. This is because Java sparrows, like most birds, have hollow bones. As a result, they weigh much less than other animals and can fly more easily.

Practice makes perfect

Before Java sparrows mate, they perform a kind of dance together. The male hops up and down and sweeps his beak across the branch he is perched on. The female mimics his movements. Java sparrows practise this little dance a great deal when they are still young. They hop and sweep their beaks, even though they are still far too young to mate. This is how they train their muscles and learn to perform the dance properly.
