Red deer walk on the tips of their toes. The back legs that we see are actually elongated feet. The joint halfway up their leg is not a knee, but an ankle. The bones of the knee, upper leg and hip are higher up in the body and are hardly visible. Because of the shape of their legs, deer and other ungulates can run really fast.
